The Paradox of Giving

There is a universal principle called the law of sowing and reaping. It is a law that is unbreakable, unerring and timeless. Whatever one sows, one shall reap. Like many universal and spiritual principles, it is so simple that it goes right over the head of many people. For instance, it would be ludicrous to think that you could walk up to a fireplace and say, “Give me fire…THEN, I’ll give you wood.”
In some situations, this law is self-evident. The farmer plants a seed of corn and once fully grown, the seed produces multiple ears of corn. It is at this time that the harvest of what was sown is reaped. It doesn’t take a lot of faith or understanding to get something as tangible as corn. However, one of the characteristics of a law or principle is that it is applicable to EVERYTHING; not just physical manifestations that we can see and touch.
What about feelings? What about attitudes? What about emotions? The resounding answer to all three are yes, yes and yes. If you want the feeling of being loved, you’ve got to give it first. Whatever it is that you seek, give it first and it will come back to you in multiples. Though it really is simple, it is not always easy to understand the breadth of this law’s application…why?
As human beings, we often get caught up measuring our giving by the receipt of something of equal value from the same source to which it was given. For example, when I share words of affirmation with you, I expect you to share words of affirmation with me. In so doing, we validate that the principle works. When that doesn’t happen, we think, “Why didn’t they respond to my gift?” This is the paradox.
What we often miss are the words of affirmation being received from others who were not the original source or the love received from a friend after giving our love to a spouse. It is not always a direct correlation, however it ALWAYS comes back…and usually far more than you gave.
The secret of living truly is giving. Give not because you are looking to receive something back but because it is the right thing to do. And know that when you do, you cannot stop the blessings that will come pouring back unto you. Let’s not just make this a season of giving, but a lifetime of giving instead.
