Six Health Themes Observed in October: From Chiropractic to Breast Cancer

October is rife with falling leaves, cooler temps and a flurry of themes celebrating health. We’ve dug up a handful of observances celebrated in just October alone!

Naturally, National Chiropractic Health Month tops our list. The American Chiropractic Association offers pointers for patients who are interested in learning more about chiropractic treatments: 1) Most health insurance plans cover chiropractic care 2) You don’t need a referral from an MD to see a chiropractor 3) Chiropractors have been allowed to practice in outpatient clinical facilities since 1983 and 4) Chiropractic treatment is ongoing; your chiropractic doctor can provide you with how long you can expect treatment to last to achieve optimum results.

A treatment similar to the physical nature of chiropractic care is physical therapy. This field is celebrated this month as Physical Therapy Month. The American Physical Therapy Association hosts this month’s observance to recognize how physical therapy improves movement and motion in the lives of people experiencing pain or injury. Just like you’ll discover in chiropractic clinics, there are plenty of ways to boost motion during physical therapy treatments to improve health.

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Steps are vamped up this month to bolster awareness of breast cancer. It’s also an important time to encourage both women and men to take steps to detect the disease early on. The National Breast Cancer Foundation (NBCF) offers resources for those at risk as well as for survivors. NBCF also hosts fundraisers to provide mammograms for those in need.

Dental Hygiene Month falls in October, and with all the sugary Halloween treats available throughout the month, it’s a great time to learn how to care for your pearly whites. The American Dental Hygienists’ Association encourages everyone to “Do the daily 4”: 1) Brush twice a day 2) Floss every day 3) Rinse with antimicrobial mouthwash and 4) Chew sugar-free gum. A healthy set of teeth and gums give you the ability to munch on delights like the season’s caramel apples. Be sure to make time for the “daily 4”!

Our Be Well Blog is a great place to read up on health and better your well-being, especially since October is Health Literacy Month! Founded in 1999, Health Literacy Month strives to improve the health and well-being of individuals through educational programs like workshops for working adults, patients and youth. Health Literacy Month’s theme for 2016 is “Be a Health Literacy Hero.” Help someone understand the benefits of leading a healthy life.

Here at Chiro One, our patients come first. Complementing our approach is October’s Patient-Centered Care Awareness Month! PCCAM celebrates the progress made to date by healthcare organizations. PCCAM shares ways healthcare organizations and patient groups can make a difference: 1) Healthcare organizations can host an open house for patients and families, encouraging “courageous engagement” and 2) Share stories of being a “brave patient” in videos and social media.

No matter how many leaves fade and fall, your health is one vital element to keep robust not only in October but every month.
