So, how can you put gratitude to work for you? Here are some ways to fine tune your gratitude practice.
Keep a Gratitude Journal
Make gratitude a daily habit. When you wake up, have lunch or before you go to sleep, write down all the things for which you’re grateful. Set a goal of keeping a Gratitude Journal for at least a month. You’ll find your entries can be a wonderful reminder of all the little things that make you happy. It will also help you see all the things you take for granted.
Remember Thank You Notes?
You know those people who take care of you, do favors for you, mow your lawn, clean your house and anything else that makes your life easier? Try writing an actual thank you note—not an email—and either give it to them or pop it in the mail. Write out why you appreciate what they do and how they make your life better. You’ll be instantly reminded of just how grateful you are for the people in your life.
Right this Moment
This is the “stop and smell the flowers” suggestion, really. Stop what you are doing right now. Look around you. Notice if you are protected from the elements. Is the air temperature comfortable? What is good about this very second? Be present to what is available to you in the moment and recognize how lucky you are; free to live the way you want to, speak your mind and be who you want to be.
Make a List of Your Champions
Write down the names of all the people who have helped get you to this moment—think parents, teachers, friends and family members. Recognize you are who you are because every one of those people took an interest in you. They invested time in you and made you a priority. That’s definitely something to be grateful for!
