As a young child who regularly saw a pediatrician to receive leg and arm braces to combat deformities in my limbs while also undergoing speech therapy from a speech pathologist—the desire for greater life, unconstrained freedom and health was an inexorable part of my life.
After dropping out of high school and moving to Hawaii to surf, I was more aimless than I cared to admit. Had it not been a chance encounter with an extraordinary man, Paul C. Bragg, who inspired and encouraged me to achieve a much greater potential, I may today be a beach bum, or possibly dead. I moved back to my then home in Richmond, Texas, took a G.E.D. high school equivalence test (where I guessed at most of the answers and somehow passed) and then took a college entrance test (again, guessing and passing). I finally became a college student, first at Wharton Junior College in Wharton, Texas where I initially failed; but, with additional effort, I gradually passed and then attended the University of Houston, where I began to excel.
Although I desired to be a doctor and healer, I continued to struggle with the idea of dispensing medicine. My whole adult life, I have believed the power to heal could be found within ourselves. With traditional medicine, I would see doctors target and treat the symptoms of a malady, but not always probe further to the root of the problem.
I was a voracious reader (confession: I still am) and was lucky to find The Chiropractic Story, written by Marcus Bach in 1968. I immediately identified with its philosophy that healing comes from within. I quickly learned chiropractors search for the underlying causes or reasons for their patients’ maladies and then make adjustments, or treat the root of the health problem. After finishing this inspiring book, I knew I would become a chiropractor.
I applied and was accepted to Texas Chiropractic College, where I eventually earned my doctorate, with distinctions and honors. I opened my first office in 1982 in Houston. I expanded it twice in 18 months and had five doctors assisting me in serving patients. I began presenting educational programs to other chiropractors and gradually other industries. In 1982, I founded The Demartini Institute and started teaching my own methodologies in healing and human development. Today, as an international speaker I travel around the world helping people reach their maximum potential. Each day I feel grateful for chiropractic and the generous foundation and philosophy of life it has given me that I am able now to share with the world.
