How to Have a Healthy, Happy Summer

We hope each and every one of you has been enjoying a beautiful summer! If you’re reading this from one of our clinics, kudos to you for keeping up on your care during these busy months. What fun is summer if you’re not feeling your best? Keep the good times rolling and use some of these helpful tips to stay safe, healthy and happy this summer

Sun Safety

One of the best things about summer is all that glorious sunshine! Earlier this month, we shared some tips on natural alternatives to sunscreen, such as mixing your own ‘screen using zinc oxide and an organic lotion, wearing UV-treated clothing and minimizing long-term sun exposure. On the flip side, there are some great ways you can treat sunburn naturally (beyond aloe!). Here are a few of our favorites:

  • Cucumber: Cut some refrigerated slices and gently rub onto your skin. The phytochemicals and vitamins help to heal the skin
  • Yogurt: Spread plain, full-fat yogurt with live cultures on blister-free skin to help re-establish pH balance and provide cooling relief
  • White vinegar: Apply vinegar—a natural anti-inflammatory—to sunburned skin using a soaked cotton ball or paper towel

“Alternative” Grilling Options

Who doesn’t love a summertime BBQ? We’re all quick to throw burgers, brats, chicken, etc. on the grill, but many of us forget about grilled veggies. There are so many options to choose from. Go for some vegetarian kabobs with peppers, onions, tomatoes, mushrooms and a homemade marinade. Or stop by your local Farmers Market and grab some zucchini, eggplant, carrots and asparagus. Cut into long strips, toss in olive oil, salt, pepper and a squeeze of lemon and pop on the grill. It’s a complete meal!

Protect Your Back During Yard Work

Around four million Americans injure themselves working around the home or yard each year—so make sure you’re taking the right precautions to avoid injury. Support your knees when gardening; check out some helpful cushioned pads, often found at your local garden supply store. If you’re using mechanical equipment, be sure to use that strap! Also, switch the side on which you’re operating the equipment quite often. Take a moment to stretch before and after heading out, too. If you find that you’ve tweaked something, call your chiropractor right away and get ahead of the problem.

Manage Chlorine Exposure

Some studies have indicated that there are risks associated with chlorine—but don’t get out of the pool just yet. One of the major issues with chlorine is that when it combines with common contaminants (hair product, sweat, makeup, lotion), it creates potentially dangerous disinfection by-products, known as DBPs. So instead of skipping the visit to the pool (and missing out on that great physical activity), limit your exposure to DBPs by showering before swimming and immediately after. Another lesser known option—look for a salt water pool! They’re gaining some popularity in the United States. You could also find a good outdoor spot, but be sure it’s safe for swimming.
