While earning his doctoral degree, he was a teaching assistant for rehabilitation classes and worked in the research department and as a personal trainer.

Whether you think you can do something or whether you think you can’t, either way you’re right

Henry Ford

It was during his undergraduate studies that Dr. Derek originally found chiropractic. Athletics were a huge part of his life at UW-Madison. He was recruited to run track and field, and was a member of the 2007 National Championship Team, having earned the honors of being an Academic All American and team captain. It was during this point in his life that he severely injured his lower back. The pain was debilitating, causing shooting pains down his leg and into his foot every time he moved from sitting to standing or rolled over.

This pain kept Dr. Derek from working out, running and competing. Even simple things like carrying his backpack to class and sleeping through the night were impossible. He tried so many different methods of relief, such as physical therapy, massage, athletic trainers and muscle relaxers. At one point, he was up to 18 painkillers a day. For over two months, Dr. Derek suffered. Nothing could get even remotely close to touching the pain until his coach finally convinced Dr. Derek to come with him to the chiropractor. The chiropractor was the first person who was actually able to tell him what was causing the problem—a bone in his lower back twisted out of alignment and was pinching off a nerve.

The chiropractor put him on his side and adjusted his spine, and Dr. Derek immediately felt relief. As he continued with care, not only did his pain completely go away, but it even improved his athletic performance. It was then that Dr. Derek knew he wanted to become a chiropractor so he could help people reach their health goals and get their lives back—just as he had. Inspired by his new goal, he continued on to earn his doctorate in chiropractic at Palmer College of Chiropractic.

In practice, Dr. Derek’s mission is to help patients and community members get back to doing the things they love to do—without drugs or surgery. He specializes in pediatric adjustments, nutrition and sports rehab. His favorite quote is by Henry Ford, speaking to the limits of the body only being
limited by the mind: “Whether you think you can do something or whether you think you can’t, either way you’re right.”
