Think about your day: texting, driving or sitting at a desk. Maybe you watch some TV to wind down at night. But, here’s something to consider… have you ever thought about what these daily, repetitive behaviors mean for your overall health? Let’s talk about healthy ergonomics.
Practicing proper ergonomics helps to decrease the wear and tear, tension and strain that can lead to musculoskeletal issues. This includes lessening muscle fatigue, increasing livability and productivity, and reducing likelihood and severity of pain and discomfort
Poor ergonomics often contribute to the development of musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs). These are painful conditions that affect the muscles, tendons, joints and nerves.
Some of the most common conditions exacerbated by poor ergonomics include:
An ergonomically sound space is one that allows your spine to stay neutral. This means that your neck, rib cage and hips are all aligned in a way that supports the natural curve of the spine. Above all, this position puts the least amount of strain on your neck and back (your whole spine, really!). It allows the body to function at an optimal level and decreasing your likelihood of pain and discomfort.
And remember: just designing your space with support in mind isn’t enough! A sedentary lifestyle can be just as dangerous to the body as smoking. Sitting for long periods of time can increase your risk of cardiovascular disease. It can also encourage high blood pressure and future brain diseases.
When possible, get up and move every 20-30 minutes. In other words, take a quick walk around the building or perform some dynamic stretching.
