Are you struggling with cravings but wishing for a healthier diet? You’re not alone—we all deal with unhealthy cravings from time to time. Chock full of food tips and fun stats, consider today’s post your cheat sheet for healthy summer eating all season long!
|Salty or bust||If your cravings typically involve salt, you may be a “supertaster.” Studies say supertasters crave more salt to drive out other flavors—like bitterness—from food.||When salty cravings hit, don’t add table salt to your snacks. Instead, try dried veggie chips, a small handful of lightly salted nuts, an ounce of sharp cheddar, or some melon wrapped in prosciutto.|
|Do you sometimes feel you need chocolate? You might be right. Recent research has found addictive, pleasure-inducing chemical compounds in chocolate, similar to those found in alcohol.||As long as you consume it in moderation, the best substitute for a chocolate craving is…chocolate! But instead of low flavor, commercial milk chocolate, indulge in high quality organic dark chocolate. Dark chocolate is full of antioxidants and helps control blood sugar.|
|Fried Anything||If your weakness is fried foods, you’re not alone. According to a 2009 study, 80 percent of us consider fried foods “something I crave.”||Make homemade French fries! Cut organic baking or sweet potatoes into wedges and toss in a few teaspoons of olive oil. Flavor with sea salt, pepper and other favorite spices, then bake on a cookie sheet covered with foil. Be sure to turn them once and bake until they’re cooked through, golden and crispy.|
|Soda||Do you slurp soda throughout the day? According to an Associated Press report, the average American guzzles 44 gallons of soda each year!||Honestly, filtered water is your body’s best bet. But if you must have your soda fix, go clear and substitute chemical-filled soda with the fizz of carbonated seltzer water. Jazz it up with a splash of fruit juice, like pomegranate, cherry or cranberry.|
|Sugar Craze||It’s 3PM and you need a sugar fix. Hey, it happens to the best of us.||It’s growing season—stock up on organic sweet fruits so you’ll have your pick of the harvest when a craving hits. But remember, sugar is sugar, even when it comes from fruit. Don’t overdo it!|
|Pizza||We get it—it’s easy, cheesy and, for many of us, a weekend staple. In 2012, Parade Magazine reported that 94 percent of us eat pizza on a regular basis.||Go ahead, eat pizza—just make it at home. Start with whole wheat flatbread, grill it, and then add organic pizza sauce, loads of veggies and a sprinkle of cheese. Enjoy!|
