What exactly is sciatica?
You may have heard the term or even experienced this pesky pain yourself.
Simply put, it’s a condition that occurs when the sciatic nerve root is injured or inflamed.
The sciatic nerve is one of the four major nerves that go to the back of the body. It runs along the front of the pelvis, down from the hip. And it’s this nerve that is responsible for a good portion of the sensation you feel in your lower back.
Sciatica can literally be a “pain in the butt.” One of the most common symptoms people report is a sharp, stinging sensation along the low back, buttock, or down the back of the leg. Although, people with sciatica also may experience pain in the hip, front of the leg, or foot.
Chiropractic care is a great way to treat sciatica because it helps address the root cause of your pain. Your chiropractor can help identify why your sciatic nerve is irritated, and adjustments can help align your spine and reduce your pain.
Adjustments can also help improve your spine’s range of motion. This helps you move around more easily – something that can be a challenge when you’re dealing with sciatica.
Your chiropractor may prescribe exercises and stretches to help prevent future sciatica attacks from happening. Ice or cold therapy may help reduce your swelling in the affected area, and that can help take pressure off your sciatic nerve.
Some pain medications may offer temporary relief from sciatica, but they don’t address the root cause of your pain, and many patients experience a relapse.
That’s why chiropractic care is a great way to treat sciatica. It’s non-invasive and doesn’t rely on medications to reduce your pain. With chiropractic care, your results will be long-lasting, so you can feel better for longer.
