10 Healthy Holiday Travel Tips

For many, many people, the holidays are a time to travel and visit loved ones.
Whether you’re piling into the family car, jumping on a train, taking a bus or catching a flight, keep these tips in mind to keep you and your family in tip-top health for the rest of this holiday season.

Avoid setting your bags down in public restrooms. While you might think that the toilet or toilet seat is the germiest spot in the place, it’s actually the floors. Look for the hooks on the wall or door to hang your bags.

Wash hands regularly—and don’t forget the kids.
Sounds like common sense, but it’s easy to forget when you’re on the move.
Every time you stop at a rest stop or gas station, try to herd everyone inside to wash up.
This will help reduce the amount of cold germs on the hands;
studies have shown that frequent hand washers have fewer cold and flu symptoms.

Stock up on water. If you’re traveling by car or public transportation, be sure to have plenty of water on hand so you and your family stay hydrated. Drinking enough water flushes out toxins and waste, increases energy, eases congestion and may also contribute to a stronger immune response to viruses.

Watch sugar intake. Yes, it’s a celebratory time of the year, but it’s important to keep an eye on too many sweet treats.  Just two cans of soda can weaken white blood cells’ ability to kill germs by 40 percent!

Avoid alcohol. Many people overdo it on alcohol
over the holidays and it’s often the drink of choice on flights,
but try to limit or avoid it altogether. Alcohol can be harmful to the body in many ways; one,
like sugar, it can reduce your ability to fight germs, and two, it can increase nutritional deficiency.

Try to keep your distance—about six feet—from those who appear ill. While this isn’t always possible, try to steer clear of those who are coughing and sneezing. Experts say six feet is about the distance flu virus particles can travel.

Bring your own pillow. If you’re flying or using public transportation, it’s always better to use your own pillow or light blanket. Even if the airline washes those items frequently, you never know if someone who’s sick used it right before you.

Skip storing your stuff in the backseat pocket. You get on the plane, pull your phone out of your pocket or purse, flip it to airplane mode and stick it in the backseat pocket, right? Stop that! You have no clue when the inside of that pocket was wiped down—and who knows if someone stuck his or her used tissues inside during the last flight.

Wipe down your cellphone frequently. Speaking of cellphones, when’s the last time you wiped yours down? You know, the thing you carry with you everywhere? Research has shown over and over that your cell is probably dirtier than a toilet seat. YUCK! Use a moist, microfiber cloth to safely wipe your phone down.

Last, but certainly not least: Get adjusted! Chiropractic is an important tool for maintaining a healthy immune system—especially during the busy, cold and illness-filled months.
