These Japanese-inspired lunches have been gaining popularity and with great reason! Basically, a Bento Box is a meal made up of lots of different items in small portions. They’re easy to put together and great for your kids because they receive a range of different nutrients. Here are some Bento Box food ideas:

  • Carrots
  • Snap peas
  • Cucumber slices
  • Strawberries
  • Raspberries
  • Grapes
  • Blueberries
  • Avocado
  • Slices of cheese
  • Nitrate-free lunch meat

Apple Sandwiches

Get creative with apples! Instead of the classic PB&J, use slices of apple for the “bread.” Mix it up by making the “sandwich” with organic, local honey and almond butter or vary the jelly or jam you use.


Skip the bread altogether and simply roll nitrate-free lunch meat with some hummus, avocado or organic cheese inside. You can also wrap the “sandwich” in lettuce or look for some pretty tasty gluten-free tortillas at many health food stores. Cut these roll-ups into cute pinwheels. And here’s a useful tip: For easy slicing, refrigerate the rollup for a couple hours beforehand.

Kiddie Kebobs

These are just plain fun. Slide different items, such as lunch meat, olives, tomatoes, cucumbers, cheese cubes or chopped chicken breast onto kebob sticks. Make sure to cut off the sharp end after making it.
