What is an ear infection?
A middle ear infection is one the most common types of infections experienced by children. Ear infections occur when viruses or germs get inside the ear, causing a buildup of fluid or pus. The accumulation of pus causes the ear to feel like it is ready to pop, and the child feels pain. Some symptoms include ear pain, fever and trouble hearing. It’s important to note that ear infections are not “caught” as one would catch a cold from others.
Traditional versus Chiropractic Treatment Options
Physicians have long treated ear infections in children. Usually, the doctor will take a look into your child’s ear to examine the eardrum. If the eardrum is infected with a virus, the doc may prescribe an antibiotic…But what’s safer than prescribing medicine?
Chiropractic care! This method of treatment is becoming more widely recognized as an effective means for treating an infected ear. In fact, chiropractic care is considered to be a safer form of treatment than prescription drugs.
Chiropractic Care is Often Better and Faster than Drugs
Did you know chiropractic care has almost zero side effects when used to reduce symptoms associated with ear infections? (Light soreness, as with any physical exertion, may occur in some patients for a few hours after care.)
A study, published in the Journal of Manipulative and Physiological Therapeutics, compared drug treatments with chiropractic care, finding that with chiropractic care, “93% of all episodes improved, 75% in 10 days or fewer and 43% with only one or two treatments. Young age, no history on antibiotic use, initial episode (vs. recurrent) and designation of an episode as discomfort rather than ear infection were factors associated with improvement with the fewest treatments.” That means nearly half of the patients in the study showed reduced symptoms after only one to two chiropractic treatments!
This study also found that in young children, limited medical intervention and increased chiropractic care helps to decrease the symptoms of ear infections faster than allopathic care. The good news is that, according to the American Chiropractic Association, six months after chiropractic care, 80% of children were infection-free.
