How to Effectively Set Goals—and Achieve Them (Day 3 to Unlock Your Full Potential)
Remember on Day 2 when we talked about our values? Now comes the
fun part—goal planning! It’s time to turn those concepts into action. This will be your
year of achievement and success—all you need to do is be specific, reasonable and thorough.
(And take massive action, of course.)
All achievable goals are based on our values, which reinforce the passion and dedication
necessary for accomplishment. You’ve got all the drive to succeed; now, it’s just
about nailing down the specifics. Following motivational speaker Zig Ziglar’s 7-step
method of achievement, here’s how you can create an amazing goal plan.

    1. Specify Your Goal. Write a clear, exact description of what you want to achieve. This must be a precise goal that relates to action. What are some features, specifics or results you can you think of that pertain to what you want? Write it down. For example, if you want to buy a house for your family, list out every feature and detail you can think of (square footage, number of windows, size of yard). Imagine how achieving this goal will make you feel and write that down.
    1. Identify Benefits. Achievement comes with perks. The end result isn’t the only win here—success sets off a chain reaction. Why is your goal worth it? What will it give you when you attain it? List all rewards and benefits that you foresee accompanying success.
    1. Plan for Obstacles. No good thing worth having comes easy. Look at the current state of your life,
and identify what aspects of it could be problematic to your goal—time, money, mentality. If you know something is
going to get in your way, brainstorm techniques or strategies to remove the problem.
(More on removing these barriers in Week 2 and 3 of this journey!)
    1. Identify Skills. What are you going to need to achieve your goals? It’s OK if you’re unsure—after all,
you don’t know what you don’t know. Do some research to get an idea of what new, added skills you’ll have to learn or
maybe if you’ll have to bring some rusty ones back to life.
    1. Reach Out. It takes a village! There’s no shame in asking for help.
If you need guidance or mentorship or even just to talk, always reach out to others who can assist you.
This can be a very beneficial tool for knowledge, motivation and support.
    1. Plan of Action. Now that you have an idea of what it’s going to take,
it’s time to plan your steps. Start by writing out a check list of each step and/or task you’ll
need to complete in order to reach your goal. Again, be specific.
Your plan of action should be a detailed as possible.
  1. SET. DATES. Now that you’ve done all the leg work behind your goal prep, it’s time to set a deadline—a specific date that you’d like to achieve your goal by. This will keep you actively working and focused. And don’t forget to set and reward yourself for milestones, too! You don’t have to wait until the end to celebrate the journey.
