Natural Methods for Soothing Colic

To the parents of a newborn who is going through colic—it will get better. It can be hard, if not impossible, to see that now while you’re in the thick of it, but it’s true. Whether you’ve only just begun to suspect your child is colicky or he or she has been diagnosed, we have some helpful, natural methods for soothing colic symptoms for you to try. Remember, just like everything else in parenthood—what works for your child may not work for another. Trial and error is parenting in a nutshell!

Schedule a Visit with a Chiropractor

This doesn’t just top our list because we’re chiropractors; it tops our list because parents report that it works. As you probably already know, experts aren’t entirely sure what causes persistent crying in a colicky baby, however, evidence points to issues in the digestive system and gut. A safe (and extremely gentle) chiropractic adjustment to your infant’s spine can help remove any interferences (aka subluxations) that may be causing dysfunction. Keep a Journal to Identify Triggers

If you haven’t already, begin keeping a journal to record what works, what may trigger the episodes, etc. You’re likely already overwhelmed and this can seem like a daunting task, but it could really help to identify what’s causing your child’s discomfort. Here are some ideas to get you started:

  • What triggers the outbursts?
  • What time of day do they occur?
  • How long does the crying last?
  • How frequently is the baby crying?
  • When did you feed the baby last?
  • How did you feed the baby?
  • Is he or she gassy?
  • Have any soothing methods worked?

Make Some Noise

Your turn to be noisy! The womb is a much louder place than many people realize due to the mama’s heartbeat and her digestive system. This is why sound machines are overtaking the baby market—infants are soothed by the rhythmic and constant sound. Some parents swear by the hair dryer, vacuum or even just loud shushing or humming.

Use the 5 S’s

Piggybacking on the last tip—experts recommend that parents try the “5 S’s” to soothe a baby (this goes for any baby, not just one with colic). The S’s include shushing (mentioned above), swaddling, side/stomach position (more on this in a minute), swinging and sucking. These five things help to mimic the womb environment.

  1. Shushing – as we mentioned, this imitates the loud sounds of the womb
  2. Swaddling – the womb is a tight space! Babies feel comforted by a snug swaddle
  3. Swinging – as mom moves around throughout her day, she’s essentially rocking her baby in the womb
  4. Sucking – babies start this reflex as early as 18 weeks in utero
  5. Side/stomach position – keep baby on his back for sleeping, but when you hold him, cradle him on his side or stomach

Talk to your pediatrician for any more home remedies you can try and ask if there’s a safe infant probiotic he or she would recommend. And one more thing, warrior parents, take breaks and ask for help. You need support, too.
