Get Juiced About Juicing
Juicing has become a hot trend these days and for good reason. It’s one of the best ways to get the nutrients fruits and vegetables offer as quickly as possible. Plus, it eliminates the indigestible fiber that some people may have trouble processing. And juicing is especially great if you know your family isn’t getting enough fruits and vegetables on a daily basis.

Dr. Kevin Smith, former Chiropractic Director of Chiro One Wellness Center of Old Town, recently shared some tips with Be Well for getting the most out of juicing for you and your family.

Isn’t Fiber Good for Us?

Why is Juicing Healthy?

“Fiber makes your digestive system work extra hard to break down food and absorb its nutrients,” says Dr. Kevin. “By extracting the water and juice from fruits and vegetables, you can ingest almost 90-95 percent of all the vitamins and minerals without taxing your system. Think of juicing as supercharging your body.”

Dr. Kevin adds that to get enough nutrients in your regular diet, you would need to eat nearly nine servings of fruits and vegetables a day, which is easier said than done for most of us, let alone kids.

Why is Juicing Healthy?

Juicing can be an essential component of detoxification. Because traditional fruits and vegetables are grown in a way that depletes their nutritional value, juicing is also a wonderful regular supplement.

Even more promising are the potential preventative benefits of juicing. A 2006 Vanderbilt University study showed that consuming three or more servings of fruit and vegetable juices per week might help prevent Alzheimer’s disease. Another study performed at the University of Chicago Medical Center linked celery juice to lower blood pressure.

How Much is Too Much?

For those people looking to do a juice detox, Dr. Kevin recommends that you talk to someone well versed in juicing before you begin to determine the right amount of time for your detox. “Detoxification regimens can range anywhere from three to 60 days,” he notes.

If you’ll be juicing as a supplement to an already healthy diet, Dr. Kevin says it’s just fine to juice every day. He does recommend choosing more alkaline foods for juicing, since the typical American diet is mostly acidic, which can cause inflammation in the body.

Here are a few alkaline-based food choices:

  • Broccoli
  • Cauliflower
  • Root vegetables
  • Leafy greens
  • Lemons

Where Does Juicing Fit with Chiropractic Care?

“Both juicing and chiropractic make the body stronger,” says Dr. Kevin. “Juicing detoxifies and replenishes deficient nutrients while chiropractic provides increased information to the digestive system to assimilate those nutrients.Together, they are a powerful combination to prevent disease.
